FUNDING COMES TO BATTLE MEMORIAL HALL IN BATTLE For many years Battle
Memorial Hall has had a Theatre, unfortunately during routine inspections
it was deemed unsafe for further use. Plans for the New Theatre can go
ahead after a £34,027.44 grant from Biffaward, a multi-million pound environment
fund managed by the Royal Society of Wildlife Trusts which uses landfill
tax credits donated by Biffa Waste Services. Battle Light Opera made a
third party donation of £3,402.74.
Specialist contractors will carry out the installation of new steel,
lighting bars, stage lights & electrical work etc. This will ensure the
local community & surrounding villages continues to get the opportunity
to perform on stage and or watch a live performances.
Battle Memorial Hall made the successful application for funding through
Biffaward's Main Grants Scheme, introduced to award grants to projects
that provide or improve community spaces.
Jane Smith, Battle Memorial Hall Manager said; "This is such an exciting
project and will ensure the local community and surrounding villages still
get the opportunity to perform on stage and or watch live performances."
BATTLE MEMORIAL HALL'S NEW THEATRE IS THE ENVY
OF OTHER TOWNS & VILLAGES - It has Jester ML48 lighting desk, 28 theatre
lights, lighting bars, chilly units, drops, legs, lush velvet theatre
curtains, white curtain and many more.

EDITOR'S NOTES
1. In 1997 Biffa Waste Services agreed to donate landfill tax credits
to the Royal Society of Wildlife Trusts (RSWT) to administer under the
fund name Biffaward. Grants made from the fund currently amount to more
than £100 million, supporting many worthwhile projects.
Biffa Waste Services Ltd is a part of Biffa Plc Group. Biffa Plc is
listed on the London Stock Exchange and is a constituent of the FTSE250
index. Biffa Plc is one of the largest single suppliers of waste management
services in the UK. It collects, treats, recovers and disposes of municipal,
commercial and industrial waste nationwide.
2. The landfill tax was introduced in the Finance Act and came into operation
in 1996. It is the first truly "green tax" in the UK and its purpose is
to reflect the impact of landfill on the environment and also to help
achieve the targets for more sustainable waste management as set out in
the Government's White Paper "Making Waste Work". The tax, levied on the
tonnage of all material disposed of in landfill sites and collected by
Biffa on behalf of HM Revenue and Customs, aims to encourage recycling
and reduce waste by raising the cost of disposal.
The regulations allow landfill site operators to direct up to 6.6 per
cent of the tax they have collected towards approved environmental projects.
However, any approved project can only receive 90 per cent of its desired
funding from the landfill tax. The remaining 10 per cent must come direct
from the landfill site operator or from a third party organisation or
company. www.biffaward.org

2011 BATTLE MEMORIAL HALL GET FIRED UP ABOUT SAFETY IN COMMUNITY BUILDING
IN BATTLE, to get new fire
doors thanks to successful bid New fire doors and an upgraded fire alarm
system will make a well used building even safer, thanks to two grants
totalling £6,500 from Biffaward, a multi-million pound environment fund,
managed by the Royal Society of Wildlife Trusts which uses landfill tax
credits donated by Biffa Waste Services. Battle Dog Training School &
Battle Light Opera made a third party donation of 10%
The funding will be used to make the hall fire-proof in
line with current regulations and ensure improved safety for users. The
escape route will be fire-proofed along with a cupboard, and new smoke
detectors installed. More than 10,000 locals each year stand to benefit
from the improvements, including dancing classes for toddlers and an opera
group.
Jane Smith, Hall Manager, said: “The upgraded fire alarm
system and fire doors will ensure that Battle Memorial Hall can be continued
to be used and will make a safer environment for all users.”
Mark Quinlan, Trustee, said “Battle Memorial Hall is the
social hub of our community for everyone within the town and surrounding
areas.”
The project will be completed in early 2012 after the festive
season. Gillian French, Programme Manager, Biffaward, said: “Community
spaces provide vital and important services to members of the public.
The completion of the work at Battle Memorial Hall will ensure that these
services continue to benefit those that need them, as well as provide
more flexibility to the way the building can be used.”
Biffa provides a range of public sector, commercial and
industrial waste collection services as well as the management of 33 operational
landfill sites across the UK. The multi-million pound a year Biffaward
fund has been set up, using tax charged on waste taken into landfill sites,
to help finance environmental projects near Biffa sites.

- NATWEST COMMUNITY FORCE PROJECT
- CO-OPERATIVE GROUP COMMUNITY FUND AWARD
DECEMBER
2011 BATTLE MEMORIAL HALL SCOOPS £6275 NAT
WEST COMMUNITYFORCE AWARD
In July this year NatWest launched CommunityForce, a new
initiative to help support local charities, organisations and groups to
raise publicity for their work and attract volunteers. The programme also
provided the opportunity for three groups in each of the bank's 131 CommunityForce
areas to win awards of £6,275 each. Organisations and charities applied
for awards during the summer and an online public vote took place to decide
which three organisations in each area would receive the awards.
Over 5,000 eligible charities and community projects in
England and Wales applied to take part in CommunityForce and over 360,000
votes were cast.
Battle Memorial Hall applied to CommunityForce because the
management committee had launched an appeal to provide 130 fixed folding
seats for the existing retractable platform in the Theatre. The local
community and organisations had donated a large part of the funds required
but there was a short fall. The CommunityForce Award will be spent on
this project and the balance will be used towards the upgrading of fire
doors and updating of the existing Fire Alarm System
CommunityForce, which forms part of the Bank's Customer
Charter, offers organisations more than just financial support. By applying
for the awards, local charities and projects became part of a local online
network giving them greater visibility and the opportunity to attract
volunteers from the local area. NatWest staff are also getting involved
by volunteering their time and expertise.
Battle Memorial Hall Manager, said winning this money ensures
the continued use of the Theatre for young and old, and provides a safe
environment for all users of Battle Memorial Hall,

to Battle Abbey. Battle Memorial Hall is a registered charity and provides
